COLLABORATIONS selected works
Awkward Moments
Awkward Moments is a series of artistic collaborations with music as starting point. Initiated by composer and sound artist Mimi Xu, the essence of the work is to use the immediacy, interaction and connectedness of live performances to create an ephemeral “meeting playground” for artists from diverse disciplines. Each episode of the series is framed by six chapters, illustrating one life cycle. The chapters follow a BPM (beat per minute) loosely based on the human heart rate and defined by a cyclical key structure.
From every collaboration a new story is born and brought to life through one dedicated or multiple formats (performance, installation, film, concert…). Each series is an evolutive work in progress and can take various shapes in different times. Aiming for an interlacing of different temporal layers of artistic traditions, the series opens a door for the collaborations to move boundaries, both physical and emotional. Each episode of the Awkward Moments series is a manifestation of equality and inclusiveness along with a strong sense of togetherness – artistic expression shapes our culture and unifies us, it does not seek to differentiate us.
Carnet de Voyage
Carnet de Voyage is an ever evolving site specific live show and a collaboration with Rosey Chan. The modular format concert is a sonic and visual journey into the heart of music history, contemporary culture and personal memoir. Rosey and Mimi revisit diverse genres of music, sounds and videos by creating a unique immersive experience with their original compositions and films. Through out their performance the duo showcases a conscious desire on provoking emotions by combining old and new technologies. Carnet de Voyage (travelling notebook) is both a testimonial of the past and a pertinent projection into the future. Each performance is unique to a space and reflects Rosey and Mimi’s musical and illustrated sketches of a time and a place.
"Pot heads" a sound installation for Liselotte Watkins "Portrait" exhibition curate by Naomi Itkes at CF Hill gallery in Stockholm.
By using 4 motion triggered speakers - one on each side of the installation, the visitor catalyses 4 different melodies by going around the installation and creates its own polyphonic soundscape. Depending on his choice of direction, the audience participates in creating his unique sonic and visual experience. The polyphonic composition was inspired by religious music from 16th-17th centuries Roman School of music. Watkins who is based in Rome has started the project by working with a group of women pot makers from the region.
